50 People Go Blind After Staring At The Sun Trying To See The Virgin Mary

50 people looking for solar image of Mary lose sight

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: At least 50 people in Kottayam district have reportedly lost their vision after gazing at the sun looking for an image of Virgin Mary.

Though alarmed health authorities have installed a signboard to counter the rumour that a solar image of Virgin Mary appeared to the believers, curious onlookers, including foreign travellers, have been thronging the venue of the ‘miracle’.

St Joseph’s ENT and Eye Hospital in Kanjirappally alone has recorded 48 cases of vision loss due to photochemical burns on the retina. “All our patients have similar history and symptoms. The damage is to the macula, the most sensitive part of retina. They have developed photochemical, not thermal, burns after continuously gazing at the sun,” Dr Annamma James Isaac, the hospital’s ophthalmologist, said.

The hospital has been receiving patients with these abnormal symptoms since Friday. When the doctors found a pattern in the case sheets, they reported it to the district medical officer.

The health department has now put up a signboard at the hotelier’s house near Erumeli, where the divine image is said to have appeared, warning people against exposing their eyes to sunlight.

Even the churches in the vicinity disowned the miracle during Sunday mass after health officers and doctors approached the clergy. The house in question has been the centre of local rumours for a few months.  The hotelier, who has since moved to another house, had claimed that statues of Mother Mary in his house have been crying honey and bleeding oil and perfumes.

Though people have been flocking to the “blessed land” – hastily christened Rosa Mystica Mountain – for long, the mad rush for the image in the sky began a week ago.

There are quite a few people still seeking the miracle, despite the experiences of their unfortunate predecessors and strict health warnings against gazing at the sun with the naked eye.

“The patients show varying degrees of severity. They are mostly girls in 12-26 age group. Our youngest patient is 12 and the oldest 60. Most of them were looking at the sun between 2 and 4 pm, when UV1 and UV2 rays are harshest,” Dr James Isaac said. He added that they could identify the problem as solar retinopathy because they were aware of the local sensation.

“Most patients may hopefully improve their vision. But there may be long-term effects on the retina,” he added.

What is it about the concept of God the makes you folks so nervous anyway! I mean, in
a world that seems to tolerate anything, I would think that this simple three letter word
wouldn’t amount to that big of a deal!

So now christians are staring at the sun looking for God(or whatever). Are we going to start building pyramids again wtf people. I date a catholic well above average intelligence but i can still make her feel retarded when shit like this goes on. It just makes the fact that belief systems like this still exist when all they do is blind people and in this case literally. Kind of depressing when you realize how totally gullible people can still be. however i take solace in the fact that this could lead to other acts that cause may blindness being instituted. I can be the first official case because i know whenever i masturbate i see Pope John Paul II. Maybe a huge christian circle jerk will yield someone a bit better looking.

This is stupid on so many levels.
Firstly, who doesn’t know that staring at the sun is really really stupid?
Secondly, so the background to the story is that someone claimed that an image os the BVM was seen on the sun from some hotel. So everyone started to flock to the hotel to have a look. Because, you know, the sun looks different from different places on this planet? Because being 100miles away would make a difference when looking at something 95 Million miles away?

    Religious IDiots.

It is a big deal. Children are indoctrinated from a young age to believe this fairy tale, and this makes them much more susceptible as adults to magical thinking and blind faith in other aspects of their lives and society as a whole. It discourages autonomous thinking, reason, and is used as justification for inhumane acts by individuals and countries alike.

That is the problem with religion.

How foolish can people get? I have no sympathy for those that lost their sight – what would they benefit from seeing the image of Mary??

In a world where there is not much to look forward to, and the only thing that gives you hope is faith, maybe they were better off blind. So let the cold apathetic geeks sit behind their keyboards atop their ivory towers. Let them busy their selves trolling the rest of the outside world. Let the atheists and the fringe tough it out. Meanwhile, is the world any better for it?

@Sideshow Bob: Yeah, way to talk shit about a dead person. Stupid fuck.

What a shameful misuse of the power of knowledge. The hotelier surely knows it’s all a farce but allows it to continue…in the name of what?

Wow is just the word for this thing going on here. Okay 1st of all I’m not a christian so I can’t relate to this, what is it about the virgin mary that makes people want to look at her image in the sun when these people who I am fairly certain are good and decent with understandably average level of intelligence when they know full well that staring at the sun can really hurt your eyes.

I can make a safe bet saying these same people tell their children not to stare at the sun cause it might damage their eyes.

So what is it about the virgin mary that is so appealing to them that they would throw away all rational thought and bring harm to themselves, how will they face their friends and families when they so happen to become blind from doing this very silly thing I just don’t understand.

From what I understand the Virgin Mary is Jesus’ mother erm, okay so what? Why is she so appealing to you that you would risk being blinded just to see her “image” in the sun which BTW might not be accurate to the real person if she really existed I can bet that none of us have ever seen this Virgin Mary in person so how would we know how she looks like? All we have are pictures, drawings, statues and images on stained glass that people tell us this person on them is the virgin mary how can we be sure it is indeed her when none of us alive here today have ever seen her she’s been dead for a long time her images that we see right now might not be accurate about the real person.

So to end it off sounding like an ass I am going to say this “what is it about the virgin mary that is so appealing is she beautiful? is she kind looking? does she look like she’s happy? is she naked in these images? or is it just because she has large breasts that all the motherfuckers are so dying to see her?” Okay that’s it… Screw you guys I’m going home!

Religion making people dumber while science is making people smarter.

Its unfortunate that smart people have less kids and are being slowly outnumbered by the misguided masses.

I can’t decide which of these three is more stupid

    1. staring at the sun with the naked eye
    2. staring at the sun to see the virgin mary
    3. TRAVELLING to do one of the above two, do these people come from parts of the country/planet where the sun isn’t visible???

Okay first of all, I aint no aethist. But i think the fact that this “hotellier” used the religious figure to attract customers to his/her hotel is just a scummy thing to do. It was obvious that no one could refute his allegations and those stupid enough to be pulled in by this well..they were blind before they decided to look up.

One thing about religious figures and those promoting the religious believes is that their pockets are calling to them as heavily as their faith…

    @Azreal Astrum

Its not the concept of god that makes people nervous. Its the fact that there are people who are crazy enough to to blind themselves believing in him.

    Stupidity makes me nervous.

If god wanted people people to go blind warshipping him then hes a dick, and I’ll take my chances.

Thank you Sheeple for recognizing the dysgenic trend in modern societies. This is, in my opinion, the most sobering theme in humankind today – the degeneration of the gene pool. Yes, selection mechanisms are at work in the most pernicious way. Immigration, the women’s lib movement, the pressure and struggle for fast cars instead of family, and more – point to a different country ahead of us, a country more like Brazil perhaps.

This is what happens when people like us give a measure of respect to the religious beliefs of others. It is time to mock their foolishness. The worst thing about religion is that it instills in children a false sense of certainty, and many will carry this burden (to themselves and society) into adulthood.
