Every time I hear a new creationist argument, I think to myself, “They cannot come up with anything more stupid than this!” And then they do! It must be divine intervention, its the only explanation.

You cannot be serious. The original real experiments used matter that was present on early earth and energy in the form of lightening, in an open system. A vacuum sealed container is not open, nor does it contain the volatile matter of an early earth. Holy Science these people are morons.

If the right reverend was right, then would he accept a jar of peanut butter without the preservatives?

I know it’s a flaky argument, but it’s on the same level as the original.

“The food industry spends millions of dollars trying to ensure that your jar of peanut butter does not contain life when you open it.”

My favorite is the “Collectively, we conduct over a billion experiments a year, and have for almost 100 years.”

    Fine, I’ll accept those numbers.

The problem, of course, is that we, collectively, aren’t checking ever damn jar with a microscope. For all these morons know, we have had new life develop in a jar of peanut butter, but without microscopic examination, and a molecular biologist to determine if the microbes found were already cataloged, there is no way to know.

Stupidity is not a crime, but it should be.

I have looked at this argument a few times. Interestingly, even if the jar WAS sterile the chances of having a #new# instance of “life” forming is actually greater in the peanut butter than it was on earth those many years ago. Given that the peanut butter already contains complex organic molecules of a biological nature the combination of some of it into a new self replicator shouldn’t be too hard. As Inari points out, looking in there for an insect is NOT looking for a new instance of life. You wouldn’t even look for microbes, as self replicators would take countless millennia to achieve this sophistication. You would look for new molecules that were increasing disproportionately to expectation based on the martix of the peanut butter and it’s normal breakdown pathway. Given time and resources it is almost guaranteed that you can find “new life” from your peanut butter, if you know what you are looking for. It is amazing how ridiculously naive and ill informed so many of our fellow humans are…

So, these idiots dont even know what the fuck evolution is…evolution has nothing to do with the origin of life, literally nothing.
