if the big bang is true then how do you explain your situation any better than someone who says god created everything out of nothing? how can something come out of nothing for the big bang theory? in the beginning there should not have been anything so how did the first atom come into existence? what is existence? do we exist? we can say for a fact that we do exist because we have conscience and are able to point that out because of that. but what is conscience? what if this is all a dream? discuss.

Well, let’s stat with a correction to a common misconception: The Big Bang Theory does not purport to explain what came before the Big Bang or even where the universe came from. It states that the universe began in an extremely dense state which expanded into the universe we know today. It does not attempt to explain what happened prior. So, no, the Big Bang does not explain the creation of the universe, it merely explains what happened once it started to expand.

This is similar to the theory of evolution which does not pretend to describe how life came into being, but what happened once it did to create differentiated species.

I don’t pretend to have the answer. The point is that religious folk claim to have the answer, when they clearly don’t. My not having the answer in no way validates the claim made by religious people.

    >do we exist?

Our senses say yes. If you don’t trust your own senses, then you really don’t have much to live for…

    >but what is conscience? what if this is all a dream? discuss.

Religion provides no useful answers to these questions.

well i’m just curious, that’s why i asked. i’ve been getting into philosophy so i want to hear from both the religious side and the non religious side.

religion is not necessary for a god to possibly exist and create the world. however, who created god? or should i say, what created god? what created what? and it just keeps looping from there. how much left to go until we find out the very first *whatever* to have existed? and how did existence get here? existence exists because of existence.

These are deep questions that cannot be easily answered.

What is certain however, the answer is not found in any religion i’ve ever encountered…

You haven’t gotten far in your philosophy studies if you haven’t come across the First Cause argument. :)

And, agree with Ian…I’ve studied religion, and none of the made up questions they claim to have the answer to actually have answers.
